DataCore Software announced that its DataCore Swarm object storage has qualified as a “Veeam Ready-Object” and “Veeam Ready – Object with Immutability” solution by Veeam Software. DataCore Software is the largest independent vendor delivering the industry’s most flexible, intelligent, and powerful Software-Defined Storage solutions. In an era of almost constant security intrusions, organizations can cost-effectively safeguard their short- and long-term backups by deploying Swarm as the scalable capacity tier for Veeam Backup & Replication, or Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365. The combined solution enables more frequent backups with less effort at a lower cost, for rapid recovery.

Veeam Software is the leader in backup, recovery and data management solutions that deliver Modern Data Protection. Backup solutions have become the last line of defense from a myriad of scenarios that involve risk of data loss or need for critical data recovery. Each organization must evaluate how often to back up, and how many backups to retain, given the cost of storing those copies so they can be quickly restored in an emergency. Cloud and tape storage may seem attractive at first but have shortcomings. Cloud storage can lead to surprisingly high monthly bills that compound yearly, while the time to restore critical data may be elongated by internet delays. Low-cost tape-based alternatives can be difficult to manage, and corrupted backups may go undetected and silently stored in tape media. For these reasons, Swarm provides a responsive, on-premises object storage solution at an appealing price point to complement the primary backup layer.

In addition to preventing tampering through immutability, Swarm offers automated self-healing, erasure-coding, and n-way replicas over high-speed networks to provide backup integrity and fast restores. Swarm can be installed on any combination of server hardware using any mix of drive densities and models, enabling organizations to sidestep supply chain constraints. Larger capacity drives may be substituted later within the same chassis to seamlessly increase space within the same data center footprint, leaving Swarm to automatically redistribute the data and balance the load.

For over a decade, leading organizations including the Department of Defense, BT, and Argonne National Laboratory have relied on Swarm to provide scalable data protection. With immutability and continuous protection, Swarm’s patented architecture helps organizations eliminate unnecessary costs and manual management, and protect from malicious attacks, procedural mistakes, and hardware failures.

“Incorrect backup policies and decisions around data storage can quickly chew up an organization’s data protection budget, waste resources, and unintentionally expose new vulnerabilities,” said Abhijit Dey, Chief Product Officer of DataCore. “Our Swarm object storage product has been rigorously tested and verified as a Veeam Ready offering. This key component of our Data Protection solution enables organizations to cost-effectively secure their backups and recover rapidly at scale, while shielding critical data from cyberthreats.”

Google Cloud today announced a new, multi-year, strategic partnership with Twitter. The company will deepen its initial work with Google and move its offline analytics, data processing, and machine learning workloads to Google’s Data Cloud. This will allow Twitter to analyze data faster and improve the experience for people who use the service every day.

Behind every Tweet, Like and Retweet is a series of data points that helps teams understand how people are using the service, and what types of content they might want to see. To process all of this information, Twitter’s data platform ingests trillions of events, processes hundreds of petabytes of data, and runs tens of thousands of jobs on over a dozen clusters every day. With this expanded partnership, Twitter is adopting Google’s Data Cloud including BigQuery, Dataflow, Cloud Bigtable and machine learning (ML) tools. These tools not only power the company’s rapidly growing data ecosystem to enable faster data-informed decisions, but also to enable deeper ML-driven product innovation.

Using Google’s Data Cloud, Twitter will be able to democratize data access by offering a range of data processing and machine learning tools to better understand and improve how Twitter features are used.  Previously, engineers and data scientists often developed large custom data processing jobs, which can now be queried faster using SQL in BigQuery. This will make it easier for both technical and non-technical teams to study data and accelerate the time to insight.

“Our initial partnership with Google Cloud has been successful and enabled us to enhance the productivity of our engineering teams. Building on this relationship and Google’s technologies will allow us to learn more from our data, move faster and serve more relevant content to the people who use our service every day. As Twitter continues to scale, we’re excited to partner with Google on more industry-leading technology innovation in the data and machine learning space,” said Parag Agrawal, CTO, Twitter.

“Helping customers manage the entire continuum of data – from storage to analytics to AI – is one of our key differentiators at Google Cloud,” said Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud. “It’s been phenomenal to watch this company grow over the years, and we’re excited to partner with Twitter to innovate for the future and deliver the best experience possible for the people that use Twitter every day.”

Cloudian announced that Green Cloud, a VMware Cloud Provider Partner (VCPP), will begin offering new services built on Cloudian’s object storage platform. The Cloudian solution enables VMware Cloud Providers to deliver S3-based storage services that leverage Cloudian’s limitless scalability, cost-effectiveness and rich feature set.

Green Cloud is one of the largest independent, channel-only IaaS providers in the U.S., with an innovative portfolio of infrastructure, backup and disaster recovery solutions. To provide additional value to customers, the company decided to launch new offerings, starting with Secure Object Storage. A top priority was finding a highly scalable, cost-effective storage platform that would also be a good backup target for Veeam and protect against ransomware.

“Cloudian HyperStore was recommended as an ideal object storage platform for meeting our needs, and after evaluating it ourselves, we agreed. It can scale to an exabyte without interruption and integrates seamlessly with our solution vendors, like VMware,” said Terry Morrison, CTO at Green Cloud

Other HyperStore benefits include limitless, modular capacity growth, multi-tenancy, fully native S3 API compatibility and substantial cost savings over traditional storage solutions.

“Green Cloud is a great example of how our Cloud Provider partners can capture new opportunities and deliver greater value to their customers with Cloudian’s object storage solution,” said Jim Aluotto, Sr. Director Americas Cloud Provider Sales at VMware.

“Through our collaboration with VMware, we’re enabling cloud service providers to build new value-add offerings that address their customers’ evolving data management and protection needs. By doing so, these service providers can develop profitable new revenue streams and grow their business,” said Jon Toor, chief marketing officer at Cloudian.
