Ivanti has published the findings of its 2024 State of Cybersecurity Report. As the threat landscape becomes more complex and threat-actor tactics continue to evolve, cybersecurity professionals are in a constant struggle to stay ahead of the increasingly sophisticated methods employed by malicious actors. This situation has amplified the demand for innovative and adaptive security solutions.

Although the goals and challenges of IT and security professionals intersect, 72% report security data and IT data are siloed in their organization, which contributes to corporate misalignment and elevated security risk. Due to insufficient data, IT and security professionals report the following:

  • 63% report that siloed data slows down security response times.
  • 54% report that siloed data weakens their organization’s security posture.
  • 41% struggle to collaboratively manage cybersecurity.
  • Struggle to make informed security decisions regarding software employees use (including shadow IT) (47%), devices accessing the network and/or corporate resources (42%) and determining what vulnerabilities are exposing their systems (41%).

“While data silos can be a technology issue, resolving them and gaining a comprehensive understanding of an organization’s risk landscape requires leadership. However, CIOs and CISOs are at odds. They face a tug-of-war challenge between enabling employee productivity while ensuring data security, which can lead to an increase in cyberattacks. To foster a more secure workplace, collaboration is essential,” said Jeff Abbott, CEO, Ivanti. “When there is CIO and CISO alignment, it helps both parties build consensus on organizational risk tolerance while promoting cross-functional security and IT data collaboration. This eliminates costly ripple effects and increases data accessibility for investments in AI.”

Data silos are a universal problem for CISOs and CIOs — and a particularly thorny one given the speed of investments in AI, which will require data integration and accessibility. To ultimately strengthen an organization’s security posture and drive transformation, there needs to be CIO and CISO alignment and executive buy-in on security. According to Ivanti’s research, cybersecurity is widely viewed as a top priority, even at the board level. Fully 80% of those surveyed say their boards include someone with security expertise, and 86% report it’s a topic of discussion at the board level. This is promising to hear in light of the various cybersecurity concerns raised by the study.

For instance, when it comes to a practice called BYOD (bring your own device), IT and security teams use tools that were designed for just in-office usage and have no effective way to track and manage employees’ personal devices at work.

  • Just 63% can track BYOD alongside corporate-owned IT assets, yet 78% say employees use their personal devices at work even when it’s forbidden.
  • 81% of office workers admit they are using some type of personal device for work.
  • Of the 81%, half are logging in to networks and work-affiliated software on their personal devices. And 40% say their employers don’t know about their activities.

Another cause for concern – 54% of office workers were not aware that advanced AI could impersonate anyone’s voice. Ivanti’s research finds that 95% of IT and security professionals believe that security threats will be more dangerous due to AI. However, despite the elevated risk posed by AI, nearly one in three security and IT professionals have no documented strategy in place to address generative AI risks.

Taking these various concerns into account, the report emphasizes the critical need for alignment between the CIO and CISO in their approach to security mandates. This alignment can help organizations identify areas of friction and make operational improvements, eliminate data silos that hinder response times and conceal crucial insights, and gain a thorough understanding of the software supply chain. Ultimately, this collaborative effort fosters mutual accountability and enhances overall security posture.

Ivanti surveyed over 7,300 executive leaders, IT and cybersecurity professionals‌ and office workers in October 2023 to understand today’s most pressing cybersecurity threats as well as emerging trends, opportunities and business strategies.

Ivanti has released insights from its 2024 Everywhere Work report, revealing that the concept of Everywhere Work has evolved to include the where, when, and how professionals get their work done. Flexibility has emerged as a crucial priority in the modern workplace.

“Employers seeking to hire top talent should prioritize workplace flexibility, as it has a clear business advantage,” said Jeff Abbott, Ivanti CEO. “To effectively implement flexible work arrangements, it’s essential to provide employees with the necessary resources, support and secure infrastructure to ensure their success. Neglecting these factors may lead to higher turnover rates and dissatisfaction among valuable employees you are trying to keep engaged.”

Key findings from the report include the following:

  • Flexible work options rank higher than remote work: According to the research, the vast majority of professionals (80%) say flexible work is highly valuable compared to the ability to work anywhere (70%). Yet just 25% of professionals say their jobs afford them high flexibility, and at least 40% would change jobs to gain flexibility.
  • Women prioritize flexibility more than their male counterparts: 36% of women consider flexible work essential compared to 22% of men. Additionally, 28% of women view being able to work anywhere as essential, compared to 18% of men. Organizations that take a more rigid approach may be undermining a critical segment of their workforce.
  • Leaders are out of touch with IT and Security needs: Although over 90% of leaders surveyed say employees have the tools to be productive in a remote or hybrid work environment, that’s not the case for IT and Security teams. Just 46% say it’s easy to access tech tools when working remotely. This disconnect has weighty implications for employers — nearly one in four IT professionals (23%) say a colleague has resigned due to burnout.
  • AI utilization rates are lower than anticipated: The overwhelming majority (76%) say AI and automation can help decrease ticket volume and provide better service. However, Ivanti’s research shows adoption rates for AI and automation solutions are low. How come? AI can’t deliver useful insights based on inaccurate data, and long-standing data silos prevent organizations from deploying AI and automation at scale.

If leaders want to empower employees to work flexibly, deploy AI and automation at scale and address IT and Security needs, then CIOs and CISOs need to align priorities. Ivanti’s research shows that 52% of IT and security professionals say security data and IT data are siloed inside their organizations. Of those, 84% say silos have a negative impact on security, and 82% say silos drive down productivity. This has a domino effect on how employees work both productively and securely … anytime and anywhere.

To address this, the report outlines how companies can align the priorities and interests of IT and Security, consider “flexibility” in Everywhere Work strategies and gain a comprehensive view of their IT estate.

Ivanti announced that it is a contributor to the Verizon Mobile Security Index (MSI) 2022. The survey based on a survey of 632 people responsible for security strategy, policy, and management, revealed an unprecedented increase in mobile attacks and losses in 2021: close to half (45%) of companies suffered a compromise that involved a mobile device and led to the loss of data or downtime in the past 12 months, representing a 14% compound annual growth rate (CAGR).

Srinivas Mukkamala, Senior Vice President & General Manager of Security Products at Ivanti, said: “It was an honor to collaborate with Verizon on its fifth annual Mobile Security Index and provide insights on the ever-changing mobile threat landscape. The findings of this report are business critical, as security leaders around the globe are reckoning with the permanent transition to remote and hybrid work and facing an unprecedented uptick in sophisticated cyberattacks. This report can help security professionals better understand the various threats to their mobile environments and bolster their defenses accordingly.”

Below are some top findings from the Verizon Mobile Security Index 2022:

  • The changing work landscape presents many cybersecurity challenges. Companies are struggling to manage a mix of remote, home, hybrid, and office-based employees. Almost four-fifths (79%) of respondents agreed that recent changes to working practices had adversely affected their organization’s cybersecurity. Almost two in three CISOs across all regions agreed that remote working had made their organization more vulnerable to cyberattacks.
  • Companies are increasingly reliant on mobile devices, largely due to the shift toward more remote and hybrid working. 58% of respondents said they have more users using mobile devices for work purposes than 12 months ago and 59% said that mobile users are doing more with their mobile devices than 12 months ago. Further, 53% said that mobile devices have access to more sensitive data than a year ago. This means that the compromise of a mobile device can now pose a significant risk to customer data, intellectual property, and core systems.
  • The prevalence and severity of mobile-related compromises has grown. From coordinated state-sponsored campaigns to unfocused, opportunistic criminal exploits, the volume of attacks is going up. 45% of respondents said that their organization had been subject to a security incident involving a mobile device that led to data loss, downtime, or another negative outcome. And of those respondents, 73% described the attack as major, and over two-fifths (42%) said that the attack had lasting repercussions.
  • Cybersecurity spending is rising in response. These factors help explain why 77% of respondents said that their cybersecurity budget had increased in the previous 12 months—and close to a third (29%) of those said it had increased significantly. And respondents expect their budgets to grow again. Over three-quarters said that they expected their budget to grow in the following 12 months; 25% said they expected it to increase significantly. Just 1% expected their budget to decrease.

“The global shift to remote work has exacerbated the onslaught, sophistication, and impact of mobile attacks,” said Mukkamala. “Hackers are increasingly targeting mobile devices because they are everywhere and have access to practically everything. Plus, most users have subpar mobile security measures in place. Security leaders need to ensure that company data is protected, wherever it travels. A multilayered approach to security provides the best protection against today’s mobile threats.”

Methodology

In April 2022, Verizon commissioned an independent market research company to survey over 600 people responsible for security strategy, policy, and management. Verizon also surveyed security practitioners and interviewed nine C-level experts in the field. Additionally, Verizon worked with several leaders in mobile device security: Absolute, Check Point, IBM, Ivanti, Jamf, Lookout, Netskope, Proofpoint, and Thales. These contributors provided additional information, including incident and usage data.

Ivanti, the automation platform that discovers, manages, secures, and services IT assets from cloud to edge, ushered in the “Summer of Security” to reinforce its commitment to protecting customers amid the uptick in sophisticated cyber threats facing companies and government agencies across the world. With the Summer of Security, Ivanti is doubling down on its mission to secure the Everywhere Workplace.

This comes on the heels of President Biden’s Executive Order to enhance cybersecurity. The order calls for improved collaboration and information sharing between the federal government and private sector, demanding “bold changes and significant investments in order to defend the vital institutions that underpin the American way of life.” In alignment with this, Ivanti is committed to taking a collaborative approach to security and raising the bar for security as threat actors continue to grow in sophistication.

As part of this, Ivanti recently announced the appointment of Daniel Spicer as the company’s new vice president of security. He will enhance the company’s overall cybersecurity infrastructure by working with engineering teams to build stronger security into Ivanti’s solutions, assessing future acquisitions for security strength and market differentiation, and bolstering Ivanti’s network security to protect its own systems and data.

On a longer-term basis, Ivanti plans to increase its headcount to create a larger and more sophisticated product security team, acquire companies that will strengthen its security capabilities, partner with security vendors to expand the reach of the Ivanti Neurons platform, and introduce new product features that will enable organizations to better secure their digital assets in the Everywhere Workplace. Ivanti will also continue to collaborate with industry leaders, including leaders from both the federal government and private sector, to set new standards for how the industry approaches security.

“Threat actors have upped their game, so the security industry needs to meet the moment,” said Spicer. “As organizations and government agencies face ever more sophisticated attacks against their technologies, Ivanti is dedicated to protecting its customers and mitigating threats as quickly as possible. This starts with focusing on building products securely, educating about best practices, and helping organizations to form a strong security foundation through a zero trust strategy. It also requires transparency and collaboration.”

The rapid shift to remote work has forever changed the threat landscape. In the Everywhere Workplace, employees use various devices to access corporate networks, data, and services as they work from different locations. While productivity has skyrocketed, this remote work landscape has also expanded the enterprise attack surface and created a myriad of security challenges for organizations.

At the same time, threat actors have grown in sophistication and boldness. Recently, hackers have disrupted daily lives and caused widespread chaos through ransomware attacks on major meat suppliers and pipeline systems. And according to a recent global study conducted by Ivanti, a whopping 58% of those surveyed said their organizations have suffered a ransomware attack in the past year. Of those organizations that suffered a ransomware attack, the majority (53%) said it took between one to four weeks to recover. Ivanti surveyed over 1,000 enterprise IT professionals across the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

To combat these growing threats, the Everywhere Workplace demands everywhere security. Zero trust security enables organizations to achieve a stronger and more impenetrable network by continually verifying each asset and transaction before permitting any access. Verification includes, but is not limited to, strong authentication of users, posture checks for devices, and micro-segmentation of networks. Zero trust also takes the whole context of the user’s environment into consideration, not just unconnected pieces of data, before granting access.

“Zero trust is the only security framework that can enable companies to effectively defend against the onslaught of attacks, and enable a trusted and secure Everywhere Workplace,” said Dr. Chase Cunningham, industry analyst, formerly of Forrester and creator of Forrester’s Zero Trust eXtended Ecosystem. “By implementing a zero trust security strategy that includes automation technologies, organizations can achieve comprehensive security across users, devices, apps, networks and data.”

Ivanti, Inc., announced the results of a consumer sentiment study, which revealed that QR code usage continues to rise in popularity, with 57% of respondents claiming to have noticed an increase in QR code usage since mid-March 2020. As the need for touchless transactions increased due to COVID-19, 83% of respondents stated that they used a QR code to make a payment (or complete a financial transaction) for the first time ever. Of those respondents, over half (54%) used a QR code for a financial reason for the first time in the past three months alone.

This study is a follow up to a September 2020 report to understand how consumer attitudes and usage of QR codes has evolved over the last year. The research demonstrates that consumer QR code usage has changed from convenience in a touchless world to practicality and necessity in new realms of our lives. Early in the pandemic, restaurants were using QR codes as menus or payment options, but as the pandemic continued throughout 2020, consumers used QR codes more frequently for practical things like visiting a doctor’s office or picking up a prescription – with an increase from 9% in 2020 to 14% in 2021. Meanwhile, social activities like dining out or enjoying a drink at a bar saw QR code usage decrease in that six-month period from 44% to 36%. Even offices and places of work saw an increase in usage going from 11% to 14% emphasizing the shift in how QR codes have been used during the pandemic. Consumers also grew more comfortable with QR codes that had a financial purpose. Sixty-five percent reported noticing an increase in places where QR codes can be used for payments, and 87% feel secure using a QR code to complete a financial transaction.

Many organizations have continued to allow their employees to work remotely due to the ongoing pandemic, increasing the importance of mobile devices for employees around the world. In the new “Everywhere Workplace,” distributed employees require access to corporate apps and data from any device, whenever and wherever they work. Despite the fact that 39% of consumers are relying on their phones more due to social distancing, only 51% of respondents claimed they have security software installed their mobile devices. Couple this with the lack of awareness of what a QR code can do once scanned, and the security threat increases significantly to both the user and their organization. In fact, 31% of respondents claimed that they had scanned a QR code that did something they were not expecting or were taken to a suspicious website.

See below for stats on how users could be putting themselves and their employers at risk by scanning QR codes:

  • 47% or respondents claimed to know that a QR code can open a URL.
  • However, only 37% were aware that a QR code can download an application and only 22% were aware that a QR code can give away physical location.
  • Two thirds of respondents felt confident that they could identify a malicious URL, but only 39% stated they could identify a malicious QR code.
  • 49% stated they either do not have or don’t know if they have security installed on their mobile device.

“As a result of the pandemic, employees are using their mobile devices more than ever before to access corporate data and services from any location,” Chris Goettl, senior director of product management at Ivanti. “As QR codes continue to increase in popularity and use, they will undoubtedly be leveraged more and more by cyberattackers to infiltrate devices and steal corporate data. This report underscores how critical it is that companies of all sizes prioritize mobile security for their employees, regardless if the device is company or employee owned. Organizations should implement Mobile Threat Defense (MTD) to defend mobile users against QRLjacking, phishing attacks, and to identify mobile OS or application vulnerabilities.”

Ivanti offers a Mobile Threat Defense (MTD) solution that protects and remediates against known and unknown threats that target Android and iOS devices, including malicious QR codes. MTD provides the ideal deployment, detection, and remediation solution to defend against attacks that occur at the device, network, and application level. And there is no end user action required to deploy MTD on mobile devices that are enrolled in the Ivanti UEM client. As a result, organizations can achieve 100% user adoption without impacting productivity. Mobile Threat Defense is a critical part of a larger zero trust security strategy to assess and ensure good device hygiene.

Employees working from home on a company-provided computer are demonstrating a clear lack of cybersecurity knowledge through high-risk behavior, according to a report released by Ivanti, the automation platform that helps make every IT connection smarter and more secure. The 2021 Secure Consumer Cyber Report found that one in four consumers admit to using their work email or password to log in to consumer websites and applications such as food delivery apps, online shopping sites and even dating apps.

The report found that consumers are neglecting to implement fundamental security safeguards across smart IoT devices at home, which could have serious security ramifications on both the individual and the enterprise amid increased and ongoing remote work spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic. As consumers often recycle passwords, the report findings indicate enterprises are at risk every time credentials are stolen from breached consumer websites, making it paramount for organizations and consumers to ensure there is a separation between login information used for work and personal apps or websites.

The pandemic significantly expanded the enterprise attack surface when millions of people worldwide began working from home, and organizations struggled to maintain business continuity and provide secure access to company resources and tools.

The Secure Consumer Cyber Report surveyed 1,000 Americans working from home amid the pandemic on a company-provided computer to examine how consumer and enterprise cybersecurity habits have changed. The report also revealed that companies have taken steps to shore up cybersecurity. However, nearly one in four companies still fail to follow the Zero Trust security best practices, such as multi-factor authentication requirements and corporate workspace segregation policies, necessary to stay ahead of the attack curve.

“The FBI issued a warning about an increase in credential stuffing attacks in September 2020 and yet consumers are still using work emails and passwords to log in to consumer apps and websites, putting the enterprise at significant risk of a credential stuffing attack,” said Phil Richards, CSO at Ivanti.

“Given the increase in data breaches of consumer-based companies and online communities, it is very likely that enterprise email and passwords are already exposed on the dark web. Companies across all industries must implement a Zero Trust model to ensure that entities accessing corporate information, applications, or networks are valid and not using stolen credentials,” said Richards.

Enterprise Security Falls Short in Key Areas

This year we have seen insecure, unmanaged and unsanctioned IoT devices become a highly popular attack vector at home and work. While the situation might be better than it was at the start of the pandemic, the Secure Consumer Cyber Report indicates enterprises still have work to do heading into 2021 in critical areas such as:

  • Secure access tools: 30% of respondents said their organization does not require remote workers to use a secure access tool, such as a VPN.
  • Security software: 28% of employees said they were not required to have specific security software running on their devices to access certain applications while working remotely.
  • Password updates: 24% of companies do not require their employees to update their password every six months or use a one-time password generator.

Enterprises will continue to face an expanding attack surface as the surge of consumer devices in the workplace persists into next year and beyond. Automated access enforcement rooted in a Zero Trust framework of discovery, authentication, verification and segregation is essential to mitigate these IoT risks.

The findings in the inaugural Secure Consumer Cyber Report are based on a survey conducted by Ivanti in November 2020. The survey took place online and used a nationally representative sample of 1,000 people over 18 working in the U.S.
